Hi.
I'm running Jagged Alliance 2 with 1.13 installed on Windows 7. The game is simply unplayable due to extremly low framerate. To illustrate, sometimes it takes a bullet 5 seconds just to reach its target.
Is there anything I can do to make it better?

The only time I experienced normal framerate is when it rained. Strange indeed.

Nighttime with turned on illumination around mercs (the lights around them - turned off with the "g" key) also causes the framerate to drop horribly.

Tried turning off the illumination, didn't help much. The game is still laggy.

This is a 1999. game. It shouldn't lag at all -.-

Well... the 5 seconds for bullets is indeed rather odd.

Can you tell us more about your specific setup of JA2? Which version number? Which sector? How many enemies? Anything that could give a clue to why it slows down so much could point into the right direction what's going wrong with your version.

version 1.13.4870
It's nightime at Drassen airport (B13). No visible enemies, just my team of 4 people.

I've started a new game just to see if it would lag during daytime. It seemed to run just fine.

This happened on one of my computers a while back and turning off the Merc Ground lighting option in the options menu fixed it for me. I think the toggle key is 'G' in tacticle

Edit: Oops just noticed you already tried that. Good luck hope you figure it out.

Sorry to revive a semi-old thread, but I'm hoping for some answers here.
I am also getting extremely bad framerates playing JA2...it is very frustrating because I love this game, and paid for it on GOG, and now it won't work well enough to even be remotely enjoyable on my only available computer to play it on.

Just like the original poster, I am also finding that it will take a bullet up to 5 seconds just to travel to the target. I haven't even gotten past the first encounter after landing in Omerta, because I can't stand sitting there and waiting for the enemy to be finished shooting at me.
It's not just in tactical mode either, so it has nothing to do with Merc lights. The main menu, laptop, map screen, everything is choppy and slow and the mouse jumps around.

I'm running the latest bugfix version of 1.13, and I'm on a brand new HP Envy M4, Windows 8, Intel i7 processor, Intel HD 4000 graphics.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks guys.

BTW, I registered here just to post this tongue

If you mean "1.13 v4870 with bugfix" by "latest bugfix version" then it's probably due to win8.
Try running the game with some compatibility options.

If you have another PC available with win7 or below the following is said to work with win8:
Install the game (JA2 + 1.13) on the PC with win <8 and copy the complete game folder onto a portable drive (e.g. USB flash stick). plug portable drive into win8 PC and run it without installation.
Is said to work without trouble then.

Gentlemen.

I found a solution to most performance and low framerate issues with Jagged Alliance 2.

I am running JA2 Gold 1.13 v4870. I was getting extremely low framerate and lags, a single bullet would fly for like 5-10 seconds. Then I remembered a solution to a very similar problem in Planescape: Torment.

The solution:
...is to make JA2 engine run on WineD3D instead of regular DirectX. WineD3D is a component of Wine and is generally used to run Windows apps on non-Win systems, but can also be used on Windows.

How to do that:
1) Download wined3d.exe from http://www.nongnu.org/wined3d/
2) Don't run the program! instead, extract it's contents with 7Zip or somesuch http://www.7-zip.org/download.html
3) Copy ddraw.dll, libwine.dll and wined3d.dll from extracted $SYSWIN folder into the root folder of your JA2 installation (e.g. C:\Games\Jagged Alliance 2 Gold\)
4) Run the game. It may take a bit longer to start
5) Enjoy one of the best games ever in as high FPS as your hardware can handle

Credits:
- Guys who made WineD3D
- aqrit on Spellhold Studios board for the Planescape: Torment FPS solution, of which this is a shameless duplicate

This may work with other oldies as well. Use at your own risk.

Cheers,
