1. Is 1.13 an official Patch?

No. The coders and modders responsible for version 1.13 have no affiliation with Sir Tech, or Strategy First. The name was chosen to be an extension of the JA2 GOLD version 1.12 (the last official version of the game). And by the time we thought about changing the name, it had stuck, was very popular, and would have caused some mass confusion.

Quote:
2. What is the 1.13 mod/patch then?

It's an "upgrade" for Jagged Alliance 2 that is an extension of the White Hat project that died out several years ago here at the Bear's Pit. MaddMugsy began releasing enhancements to the code base in the summer of 2005. There have been dozens of people involved since then and it quickly became a community project. A full list of features can be found on the homepage.

Quote:
3. What JA2 versions does this mod work with?

The mod will work with any JA2 CD version (NOT Unfinished Business or WildFire) however you might consider upgrading to version 1.12 just incase. And upgrading to at least 1.07 will remove the requirement of having the CD-ROM in the drive when you play.

Quote:
4. Will it work with the Steam Downloadable version of JA2 Gold?

For Steam: See this thread:

http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubb...age=1#Post57712

So Far, every other downloadable distribution of JA2 Gold has been incompatible with existing MODS including the 1.13 MOD. I don't expect this to change. There are however ways to currently purchase JA2 Gold CD Version. The latest (Still available September 2006) is the "Conquest 6-pack" from Strategy First.

Quote:
5. Which languages are fully supported?

At this time, Russian, German and English are supported. However, we welcome team members to help further our localization attempts.

Quote:
6. How do I find the latest version of the 1.13 Mod?

Easy, you can always find a link to download the latest release version on the front page of the JA2 1.13 Wiki, located here: http://ja2v113.schtuff.com

Quote:
7. But that version is different than the one listed in the Release Notes, why hasn't it been updated?

The Release notes thread is where we post new releases when they are available on SVN. We regularly release new features and bug-fixes in our version control system, and that is open to the public. We use this thread to let them know when there is a new release available and what the new release contains. Use the following link for more information: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubb...age=1#Post57734

The releases posted on the Wiki, are "Official" releases packaged with installers etc... when they are released, at that point, they match whatever the latest version in the SVN is. These releases are for those who do not find the need to currently keep up with whatever version is on the SVN. In other words, everything that is currently in the SVN will soon be available for download and linked on the Wiki.

Quote:
8. Is 1.13 Compatible with other Mods like Urban Chaos and Deidrianna Lives?

Yes, and No. Currently, there are hybridization projects going on for both Urban Chaos, and Deidrianna Lives. Without those projects, it is still possible to reach a mildly buggy combination of 1.13 features and UC/DL maps and NPCS/RPC's. There are various threads on various forums with instructions on how to most optimally acheive this. Or you can wait for the Hybrid projects to be officially released.

Quote:
9. Are there any instructions for modifying the XML files if I want to change some items?

Absolutely, there are a few tutorials both here in the forums, and on the Wiki.

Quote:
10. How can I add an Item or MOD 1.13 in general?

Modding kind of goes beyond the scope of this FAQ, however, again, you can find the tutorials you need in these forums, all you have to do is use the search feature.

Quote:
11. You guys have been adding a ton of stuff, when will the Mod be finished.

Sometime between now and never. Really, that's the best answer I can give. I honestly don't see a point in time where every fan will be sitting around unable to think of something else to add or externalize.

Quote:
12. Why do you release buggy code?

Think of it like a Public Beta, it's mostly fully functional. Some bugs have been in the code forever and we just haven't fixed them yet. Some we add (not on purpose though) and you catch, so you can post them in This forum and we'll fix them.

Quote:
13. Can't the bugs be fixed before you release new versions?

When Mugsy started on this, he decided on a "Release often and don't keep the fans waiting" policy. I agreed to it when I signed on and so has everyone else. We slipped once, waiting 6 months between releases, but for the most part, it's worked out great. Besides, it's a community effort. We create bugs, you find them, and we fix them. Eventually. Welcome to the team!

Quote:
14. How do I go about installing this Mod?

- Step 1: Fresh Install of JA2. I recommend copying your existing moddless install of JA2 to a new folder, or Install fresh, and then copy to a new folder. See question about versions above.

- Step 2: Download the latest Release version of the 1.13 MOD. Install into your new JA2 folder.

- Step 3: Enjoy.

Alternatively, if you'd like to stay up to date with new features and bugs between official Releases, follow the instructions Here:
http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/board/ubb...age=1#Post56723

Quote:
15. Is there anything else I need to know?

Not off the top of my Head, but I'll update as soon as I think of something. And if you think of anything, let me know and I'll add it.

Can you list the new hotkeys you've added? That would be helpful since there isn't really easily accessible general documentation.

That's something that should probably be on the Wiki rather than in here. But I will see if I can put a *complete* list together of 1.13 HotKeys. Or do you think it should also contain JA2 hotkeys?

Should also contain the vanilla JA2 hotkeys, split into sections showing which are original and which are new to 1.13.

Shouldn't that read "The mod will work with any JA2 version (NOT Unfinished Business or WildFire)"? I don't have the Gold version and the mod works fine.

Just to be completely clear, you should also add "CD" -- just so people don't read that question but neglect to read the following question about the Steam versions.

Incidentally, the policy of frequent releases is good. I think that projects can really drop off if the team dosen't feel the need to release things from time to time. Just look at UNATCO Born, a Deus Ex mod I've been wanting to download for a long time. It's literally been years and it's not finished and it's not clear at all whether the team is still working on the project or if they lost their momentum.

So, I agree that the frequent release policy is an excellent one.

A question for the FAQ perhaps: (didn't want to start new topic for this...)What's the correct procedure for installing the latest version of 1.13?

It's been a while since I played 1.13 and now I'm unsure about how to do a fresh install & there's no clear instructions to be found(?). I checked the Wiki but it's incomplete.

Could someone check if the following step-by-step-list is correct? (IMO such a list should be stickied and bold:ed so the newbies can start playing the mode without fuss/confusion)

Is this right?
1. Install JA2 GOLD (1 st disc is enough?)
2. Patch it to 1.12 with official patch (http://www.strategyfirst.com/games/GameC...ction=Downloads)
3. DL and install Mod 1.13 (currently v.602) ( http://mods.moddb.com/7315/ja2-113-mod/downloads/)
4. DL and replace the latest EXE (currently v. 650) (https://81.169.133.124/source/ja2/branches/Wanne/)
5.Play the game.

Is this right? Do I need to DL and install SVN (which I have never used)?

Thx

download install tortoise svn to get the update..the latest executables are hit and miss without the proper updating process...some of the exe's will give you runtime error if yer not properly updated thru svnso..clean install of ja2..then download and install ver 1.13 then download and install tortoise svn..create a crap folder to put the initial huge update from svn in...thats to keep it clean and seperate from yer ja2 directory which has a habit of getting messy with mod additions :p ..after ya download the svn updates to the folder ya made..copy and paste it all to eyr ja2/data1.13 folder..it'll over write...then in future..ya just click yer ja2 folder and do svn update and voila..new xml entries and files are added...and you have the original huge svn download safe and undamaged inna seperate folder

Ah okay. Then SVN it is, no problem. I saw instructions for installing it in another thread but didn't realize it was something required.

About step 2. Are you supposed to install 1.13 on top of 1.12, or doesn't it matter? I tink I saw version 1.10 flashing by when I loaded my fresh install of JA2.

Thx to tbird for clearing things out.

I do think there could be more clear instructions on how to install the mod. As it is now I believe a sigificant amount of people unknowingly screw up their installation (just like me) and then experience various bugs & problems. I know this stuff is really basic stuff to veterans here, but it can be somewhat confusing to the new/returning players.

Sort of like this:

1. Install JA2.
2. Patch it to 1.12 with official patch (Skip if using JA2 Gold) http://www.strategyfirst.com/games/GameC...ction=Downloads
3. DL and install Mod 1.13 (currently v.602) http://mods.moddb.com/7315/ja2-113-mod/downloads/

Now you are done, but if you want the most recent release... Nevermind step no.3 and instead do the following:

4. DL SVN and update your gamedirectory. See: http://www.ja-galaxy-forum.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=20;t=000067

5.Play the game! rulez

(list of steps edited)

I dont think the 5. point is correct. Tried and failed. The exe is not enough. SVN is the only option, or manually downloading each and every little bit, but I have not found any lists on which exe needs which new files...And I dont have net at home only at work so SVN's isnt even an option for me:(((((

Maybe point no. 4 is enough? Do you always get the latest exe when updating your game directory with SVN?

(BTW sorry if this should be posted as a new topic. Don't sure where it belongs, but surely install-instructions are FAQ-material?)

Sorry Pender just noticed! Your points are right but its not 2 options its the only way: Dowload the latest exe( 5.point ) then Update via SVN (4.) then it works. Atleast thats the info I sucked in here. Hope this helps!

@ Pender

If your using SVN that is all you need. Download all the files from SVN into a clean blank folder. Then copy and paste them into a clean install of JA2 and your ready to go. That is the easiest and most efficent way of getting all the updates that the devs do.

Marlboro Man: Great to know! Thanks alot for clearing this up.

The install-process seemed somewhat quirky to me, but summarized as 4 steps it's not so anymore.

EDIT: Oh you can even do it in only 2 (3) steps. Lol , okay thats simple.

How do you patch to 1.12 if you have the original version of JA2? I get an error when using the 1.12 JA2 - Gold patch on JA2 (not surprisingly).

@ Decado2

You mean original 1.03? If that is the case just update to patch 1.07 and don't worry about the 1.12 patch. Just install 1.13 over the top of 1.07.

Hope that helps.

Actually I am playing 1.13 perfecty, installed onto the Strategy First downloadable distribution install. It even got rid of the annoying "This is a trial version, please activate." Which kept popping up thanks to Vista changing the hardware key every time I booted up, despite emails with SF customer service.

I have patched my JA2 Gold version with 1.12, what kind of (currently Mod 1.13) do I need to update my game with? There are full installs I see, but som say use the latest, a lot of numbers to choose from, some small files others large...

I have patched it up once before some time ago, been away for a while and then forgotten the procedure. A lot of new things going on I see...

No exe newer than 1202 yet, unless you use overhauls b17 exe with it. As soon as there is enough fixes/changes to be added to the next exe, then I am sure RoWa21 will make one available. Just keep watch in the "Release Notes" thread.

It is just an exe. You download it, stick it in your root directory, and start the game with it. It does not hurt your SVN update at all. The only exe that get's updated by SVN is the official one.

If you read Overhauls thread or threads concerning B17 or B16 you will see what he is doing with it. Overhaul is one of our coders and he posts his compiled exe's for other's to test before he submits them for offical integration into 1.13.
