Hello Bear pit, i return again to you for help in these dark times.
Im an old JA2 veteran that has encountered a problem with my new rig, Ive played it on many different windows operating systems by the years, but with my new computer it just dosnt seem to go flawless anymore.
The problem im encountering is that the screen dont resfresh itself, thus making the game unplayable. Here are some pics of the problem.
I know the game is over 10 years old but im still hoping there is a cure to this problem, cause it seems rather simple,
and with windows 7 being the must now a days this will become an more growing problem so im guessing i was one of the first to encounter this weird "issue"
Here are some pics of the problem.

What i have done to try to fix this so far:
1. Clean install of JA2 from original CD (not gold version, but standar sirtech)
2. Update to 1.6 patch (tried 1.7 too)
3. Intall 1.13 Mod (newest)
4. Run as Administrator
5. Run in Compatibility mode Win 95/98/NT/xp SP2/xp SP2/Vista.
6. Downloaded Lites Codec pack
-(NEW)- 7. tried running it from another harddrive and path (custom path) d:\games\JA2

PROBLEM SOLVED, TURN OFF CROSSFIRE TO GET IT TO WORK PROPERLY!

And also. All of these different tips and advices from people around the forum that i have tried so far did not fix the problem OR even slightly change it. same result on every test.

-(NEW)- I might add that the trails problem witch are the main problem is that the trails have been there at all the different versions, even the clean install of the ja2 without patches or anything the trails was there.

Here are my PC speccs:

OS: Windows 7 Proff 64x bit.
MOBO: Gigabyte 890 FX a 2.1.
CPU: AMD phenom II x6 1090T 3.6ghz.
RAM: Corsair Dominator, 8gb DDR3, CL 7, 1333 mhz.
GFX: (2x) XFX HD 6950 series 2gb GDDR5, GPU clock MHz 800, memory clock 5000. (Crossfired)
HDD: (2x) Seagate Barracuda xt 2T 64MB Cache, 7200rpm.
PSU: Corsair HX 1000w.
Gear: Roccat kone (+), Roccat Apuri, Roccat kave, Razer lycosa.

Offtopic.
I just gotta say that the 1.13 patch made by the fans of JA2 is one of the best mods there is hands down GJ!
(so you can say 1.13 is a must.)
In my opinion JA2 is one of the best games ever made, it has everything i want to be in a game thus the reason i keep returning to it just to show Deidranna whos the boss of Arulco.
I never play this game on anything else then insane for a real challenge, dont want to run through it like most new games.
I also have in my possesion the original box of JA2 and JA2: Unfinished Business, in mint condition with everything carefully stored in my glass display cage. wink

Just for the heck of it i'll throw in some screenshots of earlier JA2 adventures wink great memories hehe!
Ive made some custom faces and some custom weapons too!

Thanks in advance!

do not run it where it wants to run - copy it to another directory like C:\f*ckmicrosoft\

welcome to the pit

take a look here as well, Win 7 is capable of running JA2, but for your peace of mind, it is recommended not to install it on Program Files (x86) or any other system folder, due to restrictions by the OS.
The trails problem should have been fixed in latest SCI (rev 4057), so if you are using an older one (Kaerar's is 2xxx I think) that might be the problem.

P.S. Welcome to the pit from me too
P.P.S. Faces (and voices) are always welcome, maybe you can upload your work too.

My home system uses Win7 Pro x64 and I don't have any problems running JA2. Both in windows and full screen. I've not looked at the old 640x480 screen res (since I pretty much always play in NIV mode) but the other two screen resolutions both work fine on my system. I do have the game installed in "c:\games\jagged alliance 2 EN" to avoid issues with the system folders. But if you're already doing that, I'm not sure what else would be causing your issues. But I know the game will work in this O/S.

Ive tested the tip about playing it in windows mode from the inieditor, that seems to fix the problem.
I tested all 3 resolutions and they worked good, but when i selected full screen the problem reoccured, also tried the 3 different resolutions in full screen.
Anyone got a clue to why this is happening in fullscreen?

Unsupported resolution for the monitor? Wrong refresh rate? Any number of visual bugs from a game 11 years old trying to run on a modern computer?
In my laptop, with a native resolution of 1200x800, I can run it at 1024x768 full screen without a problem. Both you and Kev have a really good computer, with an excellent monitor, which may be the problem.

Im now going to do this following

1. clean install of JA2
2. update to 1.16
3. install tais SCI_113Beta_r4057_20110116

is that all? im not skipping some important step in this now?

Apologies for writing the same thing for the 3rd time, but the code doesn't agree with me so I answered in a bit of a hurry. Now, on to give you a more detailed answer on what we can and can't do to help you.
So far, we know that it is not your OS that is causing the problem, since a lot of people have already answered you that we are able to run it under Windows 7.
As I mentioned on the other thread, 90% it's caused by a monitor with a native resolution of 1920x1080 which does not support 1024x768 resolution. This is something you can test easily enough, by trying another monitor. If on a 15'' 4:3 monitor you can run it without problem, then the problem is the monitor, and there is nothing we can do, at least until Kaerar finishes the Replacement UI project, but that will need a lot of time.
Another possibility in case the monitor switch doesn't work, is that your video cards are again too powerful. JA2 is a 32bit game, which tries to access the GPU Ram, and it cannot handle 4GB of it. Can this cause a problem? I do not know, but I think it is possible. Can you remove or disable one of your video cards to check it? If yes, and if monitor switch doesn't work, then I believe it's worth a try, but you are the only one who can say if that is so or not.
Third option. The mod Night Ops supports higher resolutions, including 1280x1024, 1280x800 and X x Y where you define both X and Y. See if running it at 1280x1024 works, which is yet another indication that your monitor cannot support lower resolutions.
If all 3 of these options fail, which means that it has nothing to do with your hardware but it's a code problem, you will have to at least compile a debug version and set some breakpoints yourself, to see which function fails to perform as needed.
If you do have any more questions about what can be done, don't hesitate to ask, but this is not something we have often see, and after all, you can play in windowed mode.
Hope this post is more helpful, and that you do not consider it nonsense as well.

Thanks Jmich, that was very very helpful smile

I did try tais new SCI the 4057 one, but nothing changed.
I tried setting the screen resolution down to 1024x768, but same again.
I'll now try to disable one card and change a monitor to see if it changes the problem "brb"

i have now tried with the old monitor (still an LCD) that i used to play this game on, its actually where those screenshots (the old memory ones) where taken on.

And im sad to say but the problem is still there.
tried many different resolutions on the screen, even changed the hz to 75 hz and 60 hz. but nothing, not even a slight change.

did you try to enable vertical sync in the ja2_options.ini. does that make a difference? AFAIR once a user had the same problem and I think the graphic drivers he used were not compatible with 1.13. try to use the search function, I am sure you will find the old thread.

EDIT: I have found the rights threads. There is also a solution posted which worked.

Yes! that must be it, the crossfire!
Thanks RoWa21

And a big thanks to you JMich smile
althrough you mentioning disabling one of the graphic cards, that was the single thing i did not try, since the monitor sounded like a more obvious problem haha (26" lcd). And of course the graphic cards was the problem, oh the irony!

Thanks to everyone for helping me out, i'll be sure to update the main post to help others with similar problem!

But i guess i got to get home to try it before i say if it works or not smile at job computer.
